Photogravures reveal life and times of early 20th-century Native Americans

Within the walls of the Muskegon Museum of Art, six galleries invite visitors to step into the world of Edward S. Curtis, early 20th-century photographer, adventurer and unlikely historian.

For the greater part of his adult life, the once-celebrated society photographer devoted himself to recording the lives and times of the native peoples of North America. By doing so, he lost his health, wealth and marriage. Between 1907 and 1930, Curtis documented the everyday of Native American peoples, capturing portraits and landscapes to create what is considered the greatest artistic collaboration and photographic achievement in history.
