Memorial Day Weekend at MNHS Sites Offer Great Visuals

This weekend MNHS is set to kick off the start of the summer sites season and commemorate Memorial Day with a slate of events, including:

• Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29, Historic Fort Snelling: As the fort opens for the summer season, explore the many stories that converge at this historic place, from the Dakota to African-Americans to the military. Then check out two new exhibits, one on Native American veterans and one on Japanese-American incarceration during WWII. On Memorial Day, active military and veterans receive free admission, and visitors can enjoy free rides to the site via Metro Transit.

• Memorial Day Powwow, May 29, Mille Lacs Indian Museum & Trading Post: Experience a contemporary powwow honoring past and present American Indian veterans on Memorial Day. Throughout the holiday weekend, visitors can also enjoy an art market, film festival and music performances by contemporary Native artists.

• Death of the Empire Builder Weekend, May 27-28, James J. Hill House: Hill House marks the anniversary of Hill’s 1916 death and explores Gilded Age mourning with special tours, historic artifacts, guest organists and more.

Visit the MNHS calendar for a full list of the weekend’s events. Media are welcome to visit any MNHS sites and museums during Memorial Day weekend and interact with guests. Please introduce yourself to site staff upon arrival.
