Bemidji Pioneer: 'Education opens doors': Banquet recognizes American Indian high schoolers

BEMIDJI -- Before they walk across the stage at their school-wide commencement later this month, a group of American Indian seniors at Bemidji High School got some special recognition.

Bemidji Area Schools leaders, including Superintendent Jim Hess and BHS Principal Brian Stefanich, presented special certificates to 31 soon-to-be graduates at Thursday’s American Indian Seniors Honor Banquet. The banquet is designed to highlight the students’ academic accomplishments in a state with one of the country’s most pronounced achievement gaps.
