American Indian parents get involved in schools

Countless times, we've heard school board members, teachers, administrators and others say that shortcomings in our public schools could be fixed in part by more parent involvement. If parents checked up on what and how their students are doing, pitched in and offered to help where needed, we're told, any number of problems could be alleviated, including the achievement gap between white and minority students.

If that's the case, it's time to heartily applaud members of Rochester's American Indian community, who are taking advantage of a new Minnesota law that allows them to have greater input in the education of their children. The American Indian Parent Committee has gone to the Rochester School Board with specific requests they hope will improve the outcomes for students.
