Slow start, but Red Lake advances with 85-49 win over Mahnomen - Set 2 - P12

Section 8A East Quarterfinal – #9 Mahnomen 49 vs. #1 Red Lake 85

The Red Lake Warriors overcame a slow start to advance in the East Sub-Section 8A Tournament Thursday night at Bemidji State.

The Mahnomen Indians jumped out to an early lead as Red Lake didn't score their first points of the game until 14:26 remined in the first half.

Mahnomen held a 20-16 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half but that's when Red Lake started to put things together. With the score tied at 22-22, the Warriors went on a 20-0 run and took command of the game.

Red Lake led 42-25 at halftime as they improved their overall record to 22-4 and picked up their eighth win in their last nine games.

Jamie Cook hit five three pointers for the Warriors and led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Robert Beaulieu added 18 points and Rob McClain 17 points for Red Lake.

Jon Starkey led Mahnomen with 14 points as the Indians end their season with an overall record of 4-20. It was the second time the two teams had met with Red Lake winning 102-59 on January 16th at Red Lake.

Red Lake will now face the Fosston Greyhounds in the Sub-Section semifinals on Saturday, March 11th in Thief River Falls (12:00 noon on 96.7 FM & 106.5 FM). Red Lake defeated Fosston 75-55 on December 3rd at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.

Section 8A East Quarterfinal – #5 Northome/Kelliher 51 vs. #4 Fosston 71

The Fosston Greyhounds closed the regular season against Northome/Kelliher and opened the post season against the same Mustang team. It was the same result Thursday night as Fosston beat Northome/Kelliher for the second time in two weeks. Despite a two week layoff, the Greyhounds put together one of their best overall performances of the season on Thursday night at Bemidji State University. Jesse Sather led Fosston with 22 points as the Greyhounds improved their overall record to 17-10. The final shot Sather attempted was a three pointer that found the mark and gave Jesse his 1,000th career point. The Greyhounds led 45-27 at halftime and led by as many as thirty points in the second half. Dylan Albrecht led Northome/Kelliher with 11 points as the Mustangs end their season with an overall record of 15-12. Fosston will now face Red Lake in the East Sub-Section 8A semifinals on Saturday, March 11th at Thief River Falls (12:00 noon on 96.7 FM and 106.5 FM). Section 8A East Quarterfinal – #7 Clearbrook/Gonvick 72 vs. #2 Cass Lake-Bena 100

Cass Lake/Bena outscored Clearbrook/Gonvick 56-29 in the second half enabling them to run away with this one, after only a one point lead at halftime 44-43. The Bears came out aggressive on both sides of the ball in the first half, but all of that went south in the final eighteen minutes. Only committing eight turnovers in the first half, the Bears would be at that mark within the first three minutes of the second half. That long with increase energy on the Panthers' side led to a disasterous end to the game for the Bears.

Cass Lake/Bena was 8-11 from the free throw line, had 35 rebounds, 17 steals and 12 turnovers

Win-E-Mac dominated right from the start and never allowed Blackduck an opportunity to make a run. Defense, patience, capitalizing on turnovers & a balanced attack led the Patriots to the next round on Saturday.

Win-E-Mac was 12-25 from the free throw line, had 39 rebounds, 17 steals, 18 turnovers
