Bois Forte Band – Proud of Chelsea Mason

Bois Forte Band member Chelsea Mason has been named as one of the top five finalists for the 2017 Miss Minnesota Basketball Award. This announcement came out Sunday March 19, 2017 by the Minnesota Girl’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Chelsea is the daughter of proud parents Billie and Tony Mason. Chelsea led the Mt. Iron/Buhl Rangers to their 7th consecutive Girls State basketball tournament appearance leading the way in scoring with an average of 21.2 points per game for the entire season. In addition she is now the holder of the “most steals” with over 918 recorded steels throughout her high school career. Chelsea’s total scoring record was 3,035 points that placed her in the top 20 scorers the in State.

The Mt. Iron/Buhl Rangers were defeated by Goodhue in the State finals last Saturday March. 18, thus ending her high school career. As of this writing Chelsea has not made public her intentions of what college she has chosen to attend. Whatever college she chooses to attend will be a full scholarship because of her talent on the hardwood floor. The school that she accepts will have one fine dedicated athlete as well as scholar. She is an exemplary role model for her fellow Band members to follow, of which there are many.

This small community of Nett Lake wants to let her know that we are all extremely proud of her for this amazing accomplishment. The entire Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and all Native Americans will be honored to know that she will become “Miss Minnesota Basketball”. She may be the first Minnesota Native American to receive this prestigious award. Through her hard work and dedication she is well deserving of this highly acclaimed award!

Nett Lake has an astounding history of producing very talented athletes from back in the Orr High school era, through the evolution of Northwoods High School. These young boys and girls have made their mark on the history books of sports in basketball, football, baseball, and track. This is evident today as the Northwoods boys take their turn at the boys State basketball tourney. Our full support goes with these fine young athletes and we wish them well. And good luck.
