Deer River Man Accused of Assaulting Toddler

DEER RIVER—A Deer River man was arrested and charged with two felonies Wednesday after a 2-year-old child who had been in his care sustained a large skull fracture and other serious injuries.

Corey Michael Cloud, 28,—charged with first-degree assault and malicious punishment of a child causing great bodily harm—was first questioned Jan. 31 after the Itasca County Sheriff's Office received a report that the 2-year-old was at the Deer River Emergency Room with a skull fracture, according to a criminal complaint. An emergency room doctor told a lieutenant with the sheriff's office that the child's injuries were not consistent with the explanation provided: that the child had slipped on a wet floor and hit her head.
