Oliver "Jimmy" James Gibbs, 76 years old, of Redby, is now and forever with his Lord and Savior. Jimmy journeyed home on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Sanford Hospital in Bemidji, Minnesota. Jimmy was born in Ponemah, MN on January 17, 1940 the son of Sally Gibbs and Isaac Johnson.

Jimmy was an amazing man who was loved by everyone. Jimmy, who was also known as "Smoss" during his high school years met the love of his life, Darlene Kay, in his early 20's and they were married in Bemidji in 1965. Together they made their home and raised their children in Redby and lived there until her passing in 1995. Jimmy was a very talented man. His skills included netting and fishing, playing steel guitar, being a skilled carpenter and a wonderful story teller. The stories that he shared were also strong teaching tools in the Traditional Indian ways. He loved to share them with his family and friends. In Jimmy's younger years of carpentry he and his brother-in-law built their own boat. He continued with Red Lake Builders until his retirement in 1996. Jimmy found the Lord in 1978 and continued his walk up until his passing. Jimmy and Darlene often traveled to other communities sharing the word of the Lord through fellowship and his music. He felt it was very important to instill good Christian values in his children and he led many of his family members to the Lord. He loved spending time with his family, especially his great grandchildren who adored him immensely. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The family that Jimmy joins again are his wife; Darlene Kay, parents; Isaac and Sally, sisters; Annie Fineday, Angeline Cutbank, June Lussier, Jackie Gibbs and Alvina Beaulieu, brothers; Myron Gibbs and Paul Lussier, Jr. and many other family members.

Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his sons; Richard (Delphine) Gibbs and George Gibbs both of Redby, daughters; Lisa Lyons of Bemidji, Tina (Bob) Roybal of Redby, Margaret (Conrad) Gibbs of Bemidji and Annie Sumner of Redby, sister; Delores Fineday of Pennington, special sister; Diane Gibbs Beaulieu, great auntie; Mary Gibbs, special granddaughters; Courtney DeFoe and Brooklyn Roybal, 22 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, cousins, many family members and friends.

A wake for Jimmy will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7th at the Redby Community Center and continue until his 2:00 p.m., funeral service on Friday, December 9th at the Redby Community Church. Pastor Tom Pollock will officiate. Pallbearers for Jimmy will be Jeremiah DeFoe, Michael DeFoe, Jr., Guy Johnson, James Johnson, Brandin Fineday and Matthew Bryan. Alternates are Lowell Fisher and Robert "Bobby" Fisher. His honorary pallbearers are all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment will be in the Redby Community Cemetery following his Friday service.
