Heavy snow, strong winds may create dangerous driving conditions

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises motorists in northwestern Minnesota to closely monitor weather conditions because of forecasted snow and high winds, which could create dangerous driving conditions.

Along with heavy snow beginning Monday night, the National Weather Service is expecting strong winds to develop Tuesday morning which would significantly reduce visibility, creating difficult or even hazardous driving conditions.

Motorists are advised to be prepared to adjust their travel plans based on the weather conditions and check driving conditions at http://www.511mn.org.

Remember to:

• Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.

• Stay back at least five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud.

• Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They may also travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.

• Slow down and use your head lights. Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.

• Check road conditions at http://www.511mn.org or call 511; it takes time to get roads back to good driving conditions.
