HOMELESS ADVOCATE

Positions available: 3 on-call advocates

Work hours: Rotating 8 hour shifts, essential rule applies

Hourly wage: $8.00 per hour

Supervisor: Program Manager

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Answer the telephone and door, responding appropriately to all inquiries.

• Stay informed about what shelter beds are full or available. And who is currently staying at the shelter.

• Read daily log to keep updated on relevant information, make entries every shift of information pertinent to shelter operations.

• Make decisions regarding which applicant individuals and families to admit for shelter, according to RLHS policies.

• Complete intake procedures and orientation with new residents.

• Complete other forms as needed.

• Complete discharge papers with exiting residents, clean vacated bedrooms/bed areas, prepare beds for next residents.

• Work with residents to accomplish household activities.

• Complete household activities that are not resident responsibility: cooking, house laundry, cleaning staff bathroom and office, keeping storeroom and attic clean and neat.

• Provide information and referral services to residents and non-resident clients as they seek housing and resources for other needs.

• Understand and maintain resident/client confidentiality and data privacy standards.

• Serve as a mandated reporter of child or vulnerable adult maltreatment.

• Make resident and staff safety a priority in all decisions.

• Build positive informal relationships with residents, teaching functional life skills by example in the areas of home management, parenting, budgeting, etc.

• Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and other relevant training.

• Refer non-standards situations to Program Manager for final decision.

• Understand emergency procedures and implement when needed.

• Never leave the shelter property without another staff person in attendance.

• Other functions of Homeless Shelter as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Effective verbal and written communication skills and basic computer skills.

• One year experience working with homeless people.

• Knowledge of and experience working with Native American people.

• Basic knowledge of available human services.

• Acceptable criminal background and social services background checks.

• Must have phone and reliable transportation.
