Section 8A East Semifinal – #1 Red Lake advances to 8A East Championship with 79-63 win over #5 Blackduck

Red Lake got off to a quick start leading Blackduck 20-4 in the first few minutes, executing offensively from missed Drake shots and turnovers. The Warriors maintained the tempo to their liking throughout the entire game and never trailed in the Section 8A East Semifinal Saturday afternoon.

Red Lake shot 8-13 from the free throw line, had 31 rebounds and 20 turnovers

Red Lake Warriors improve to 24-4 on the year, also their 12 win in a row, and will advance to the Section 8A East Championship Monday night at 7:45pm in Thief River Falls at Ralph Engelstad Arena against the Fosston Greyhounds, who would upset Cass Lake-Bena 70-65 in overtime.

The Warriors beat Fosston on December 18, 2015 at the Sanford Center, 66-57, and have beaten both Kittson County Central and the Northern Freeze in the Holiday Tournament at NCTC in December 2015.

Section 8A East Semifinal – #2 Cass Lake-Bena upset by #3 Fosston Greyhounds 70-65 in overtime

**OVERTIME**

For the second time in less than 48 hours, the Fosston Greyhounds played in an overtime tournament game and for the second time they came out with the win. After defeating Win-E-Mac 52-43 in overtime on Thursday, the Greyhounds beat Cass Lake-Bena 70-65 in overtime Saturday afternoon in the East Sub-Section 8A semi-finals in Thief River Falls. Cass Lake-Bena came into the game with a 21 game winning streak and had not lost a game since December 17th when they lost to Pine River-Backus 58-53. The Panthers led by as many as 12 points in the first half at 28-16 but Fosston was able to cut the deficit to seven at halftime 32-25. The Greyhounds would keep chipping away at the Cass lake-Bena lead and finally tied the game at 56-56 on a Jesse Sather three pointer with 33 seconds left in regulation. Free throws played a big role in the outcome as Fosston shot 25 of 46 at the line and Cass Lake-Bena was 8 of 13 at the stripe. Cody Baumann led Fosston with 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Greyhounds improved their overall record to 19-9. The Panthers were led by Alvin Wind with 20 points as Cass Lake-Bena ends their season at 24-4. The game was tied at 56-56 at the end of regulation and Fosston never trailed in the overtime. Fosston will now face top seeded Red Lake in the East Sub-Section 8A Championship game on Monday, February 29th at 7:45 pm in Thief River Falls (96.7 FM). Red Lake defeated Fosston 66-57 when they played December 18th at the Sanford Center in Bemidji. Red Lake won their semi-final game over Blackduck on Saturday afternoon 79-63 and improved their overall record to 24-4.

Other than a quick five to three lead early in the game for the Red Lake County Rebels, the game was controled by the Kittson County Central Bearcats. Despite only being able to build up a twelve point lead and not make the spread anymore throughout the game, the Bearcats kept a very steady lead between six and ten points much of the second half. Red Lake County put together a 13-2 run midway through the second half, followed by a quick 8-0 run answered by the Bearcats.

Kittson County Central was 16-24 from the free throw line, had 31 rebounds, five steals and 10 turnovers

The Storm got off to a quick 5-0 lead, follwed by eleven straight points for the Freeze to set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Freeze would outscore the Storm 36-20 by halftime and build up a twenty-four point lead at one point in the game.
