Joyce Annette Wind, ZHAA-WAN BI-NE-SI-IKWE which means South Eagle Woman, age 70, of Red Lake passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Red Lake IHS Hospital in Red Lake with her family by her side. Joyce was born on February 2, 1945 in Red Lake to Reuben Sr. and Margaret Olive (White) Wind.

Joyce lived in Red Lake and attended Red Lake Elementary and High School. Joyce then moved to Minneapolis in 1964 and from there she moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1967. In 1973 she moved back to Minneapolis and worked for the American Indian Center for several years. In 1992 she moved home to Red Lake and worked for the Chemical Dependency Program at the Four Winds and Redby Group Homes. She retired in 2008 due to health problems.

Joyce loved spending time with her family, friends and her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed playing games and doing puzzles, going for rides every day and going to the casino. Joyce loved going to pow-wows, gatherings and any kind of sale. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and everyone who knew her.

Those welcoming Joyce home are her parents Reuben Sr. and Margaret, daughter; Brenda, granddaughter; Breanna, brothers; Terry and Charles Wind, grandparents and other relatives.

Those she leaves behind to cherish her memories are her daughters; Toni Wind of Red Lake. Margaret Wind of Somerset, Wisconsin and Melody Hanners of Rochester, MN, sons; Gary Wind of Red Lake and Randy Wind of Minneapolis, brother; Reuben (Luann) Wind, Jr. of Red Lake, sister; Cheryl Wind of Red Lake, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

An overnight wake for Joyce will begin at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8th and continue until her service on Saturday, October 10th all being held at the Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake. Helping lay Joyce to rest are Dennis Robinson, Jr., Michael Wind, Gerald Wind, Sr., David Wind, Jaisden Hanners, Jaaron Hanners, Gary Wind, Jr. and Reuben Wind III. Alternate pallbearers are Jason Wind, Sr., Jeremy Wind and Lance Wind. Her honorary pallbearers are Martha Smith, Tori Kingbird, Stephanie Kingbird, Doris Kingbird, Alvin Jourdain, Jr., Karen Jones, Mary Jane 'MJ' Cloud, Mary Alcozer, Shirley Corona, Eliza Spears and all her co-workers from the Chemical Dependency Program. Interment will be in the Wind Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah following her Saturday service.
