Drakes dominate, beat Red Lake 53-20

RED LAKE - Senior Mason Frenzel scored the final touchdown on Friday evening to put a nice cap on the Blackduck High School football team's 53-20 victory over Red Lake High School.

"The first week, we didn't do so well on the offensive line and I thought we did a good job on that tonight," said Drakes coach Jeff Volk. "Today was a good game for us."

The Drakes came out strong, scoring 20 points in the first quarter with touchdowns from junior Mort Eckstrom, senior Nathan Affield and junior Jonathan Smid.

Blackduck jumped ahead even further in the second quarter when sophomore Terris Record scored a touchdown off an interception return.

The Warriors remained off the scoreboard until senior Robert McClain, Jr. made an interception at the 6:50 mark of the second quarter and headed off toward the end zone for the touchdown.

McClain Jr. went on to score again in the third quarter with less than a minute left as he snatched a loose ball in the end zone and gained a touchdown, to end the third quarter behind 53-12.

McClain Jr. didn't stop there, as he scored a touchdown off of another interception with 30 seconds left in the game. The Warriors would then proceed to run the ball into the end zone for the extra two points to close the game down 53-20.

For the Drakes, Ekstrom led the team with three touchdowns on the night along with Record, who earned two.

The Drakes, now 1-1, are back in action on Friday, Sept. 4, as they host Pine River-Backus. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
