No cause of death for 19 Fort Belknap bison

Department of Livestock officials are moving cautiously before announcing the probable cause of death of 19 genetically pure bison found on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation three weeks ago.

“Before we start jumping on assumptions with what we’re seeing, I want to make certain that I’m not missing something. That’s why we’re doing the more extensive testing procedures here,” said A.W. Layton, director of the state veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Bozeman. “We have an incident there that may be the precipitating cause, but until I can see all my results I’m holding back on pointing the finger.”
