Appeals court upholds convictions of ex-tribal official

A federal appeals court upheld the convictions last week of a former planner with the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, although the legalities of his five-year prison sentence and amount of restitution he was asked to pay were reversed and sent back to district court.

Jeffrey Charles Zander was convicted of mail and wire fraud, money laundering and willful failure to file tax returns in 2013 after he was accused of embezzling nearly $200,000 from the Paiute Tribe, based in Southern Utah.

He was sentenced to 68 months in prison by U.S. District Judge David Nuffer and ordered to pay $202,543.92 in restitution.
