Delbert Gary Shabaiash, Sr., 49, "Gezhiyaasiged" which means "One that Shines Brightly" of Sawyer and the Eagle Clan, entered the spirit world unexpectedly on Thursday, July 23, 2015. He was born the son of Joseph, Sr. and Delphine (Benjamin) Shabaiash on March 17, 1966 in Sandstone, MN.

Delbert worked for the Housing Program with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Black Bear and Mille Lacs Grand Casino's in security. In his younger years he enjoyed working on cars. He had an adventurous spirit and loved travel. A few years ago, he started taking care of his grandson "Hank" and dedicated himself and all he had to him. Delbert was a man with a big heart that cared for everyone, especially his elders. Delbert was grateful of his niece and nephew Deb and Dan Tiessen for always taking care him in his time of need. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Those he meets again are his parents, Joseph Sr. and Delphine, brothers; David, Dennis and Lloyd Shabaiash, sister; Linda Shabaiash, nephews; Darwin and Russell Diver, brother-in-law Harold Diver, Sr.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife; Crystal Shabaiash, sons; Delbert Shabaiash, Jr., Javad Khan, Antulio and Wambdi Leith, Denny Martin and Daniel Tiessen, Jr., daughters; Amberann Khan, Donna and Delaina Tiessen, brothers; Joseph Jr., Daniel (Pam), Rodney, Leslie (Ramona), Roy and Donald Shabaiash and Vincent (Mary Sue) Merrill, sisters; Lois Shabaiash, Rosalie (Neil) Gopher and Ruth (Bill) Spears, 12 grandchildren, special niece and nephew Deb and Dan Tiessen, the mother is his son, Billie Jo Martin, many uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

An overnight wake for Delbert will begin at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, July 26th and continue until his traditional service at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 27th all being held at the Lake Lena Community Center in Ogema Township. Larry "Amik" Smallwood will be his spiritual leader. Interment will be in the St. Mary and Joseph Cemetery at Sawyer, MN following his Monday service.
