Walter Laverne Morrow, Sr., 85, "Naawakwe" which means "Midday" of Minneapolis passed away on July 12, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born on January 21, 1930 in Onigum, MN, the son of John and Lettie (White) Morrow.

Walter was born in Onigum, Minnesota. At the age of 6 he was unfortunately sent to the Indian Boarding School, where he remained until he graduated at the age of 18. Upon graduation, Walter joined the United States Army, where he was soon sent overseas to work as a medic during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to the Leech Lake Reservation where he soon met his future wife, Delores Staples. Together they raised six children. Even though they divorced in 1970, they remained good friends. Soon after, they relocated to Minneapolis, although one year apart from each other. Walter was employed by the U.S. Government as a custodian at the Minneapolis Federal Building for 22 years, retiring at the age of 62. He loved spending time with his family. He loved hunting and fishing, especially in his younger years. Going on weekend outings and family picnics. Walter especially loved to play bar bingo with his family and friends. He also liked to have a beer and brandy on occasion. Walter will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family that Walter now joins are his parents, John and Lettie, three sons, two of whom died in infancy, a daughter, two sisters, a brother, his ex-wife, two granddaughters and a great grandson.

He leaves behind his daughters; Brenda Morrow of Roseville, Shirley Gomez-Cala of Brooklyn Center, Jean Torres of Chihuahua, Mexico and Joan Capitaine of Minneapolis, two brothers; Max and Jack Morrow, two sisters; Janice Brown and Leona Shaugobay, 26 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

An overnight wake for Walter will be begin at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 14th at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He then will travel to the Veteran's Memorial Building in Cass Lake for a second overnight wake to begin at 6:00 p.m. on July 15th. Funeral services for Walter will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 16th officiated by Father George Ross. Helping to lay Walter to rest will be Jesse Morrow, David Gomez-Cala, Thomas Iverson, Jr., Sergio Capitaine, Tony Morrow and Doug Hodgeman. His honorary pallbearers are Vicente Morrow, Larry Donnay, Andy Hull, David Perry, Archie LaRose, Wayne Morrow and Burnham Wilson. Interment will be in the Staples-Fairbanks Cemetery at Cass Lake/Mission following his Thursday service.
