A majority of Manitobans agree Canada committed a "cultural genocide" against its First Nations through the residential school system, but the country is split on whether Ottawa has done enough to right the historical wrong, according to a new poll.
Probe Research surveyed a random sample of 1,000 Manitobans over the phone about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) findings.
Nearly two-thirds of Manitobans (64 per cent) polled said they agreed that the forcible placement of thousands of First Nations kids in residential schools constituted cultural genocide. Thirty-three per cent of those voters strongly agreed with that assertion; 31 per cent moderately agreed.
