Woman dies after high-speed pursuit in Laporte

LAPORTE, Minn. -- A woman has died after a 25-minute high speed chase amidst the busy Memorial Day holiday traffic west of Leech Lake.

The chase that reached speeds of up to 90 mph Friday morning began somewhere outside of Laporte and headed east on Highway 200. The woman, 19-year-old Hailey D. Bergstrom of Sebeka, Minn., lost control of her 2004 Ford Taurus on a 90-degree turn in Laporte just before noon. She was ejected from the vehicle.

The chase began at 11:35 a.m. It was not clear how many or what squad cars were chasing her, but the State Patrol and Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes were at the scene of the crash.
