Shakopee man, living extravagant life, sentenced to 51 months in prison for tax fraud

MINNEAPOLIS -- A Shakopee man has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for withholding taxes from his home health care business but failing to pay the money to the Internal Revenue Service.

Daniel Nok Musa, 56, instead lived an extravagant lifestyle, buying multiple houses and luxury vehicles and gambling at Mystic Lake Casino near Shakopee losing between $1,000 and $2,000 per week in at least 462 visits between 2006 and 20011, according to Minnesota U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger’s office.

Musa deducted the withholding taxes from his personal care attendants’ paychecks but failed to pay $284,000 in employment taxes, said Luger’s office in a news release. Beginning in 2002, while operating his business called “Life Care,” he started paying little or nothing to the IRS and pocketed the money. He changed the name of his business several times after the IRS tried to collect the unpaid taxes.
