Maine Indians share stories of children taken away

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- For more than 100 years, the U.S. government separated Native American families across the country in an effort to assimilate them into white American culture.

On Thursday Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission, or TRC, held a forum at Husson University and presented a documentary of two years worth of information and interviews done with people, both Indian and non-Indian, about their experiences growing up in a nation that wanted to wipe away the Native American culture.

The TRC wants to tell the story of what happened so history does not repeat itself and no subculture is abused in the future.
