Local Transportation Officials testified before Senate Indian Affairs Committee on Wednesday

(Washington, D.C.) — The Director of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Transportation Department and the Chief Engineer of the Wyoming Department of Transportation testified Wednesday before the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. “Big John” Smith and Delbert McOmie, respectively, appeared at the “Tribal Transportation: Pathways to Safer Roads in Indian Country” oversight hearing. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso is the chairman of the committee.

In his opening statement, Senator Barrasso pointed to the two men’s history of working to improve road safety on the Wind River Indian Reservation. “Last year the two tribes, along with the state, completed construction of what is commonly called the ‘17 Mile Road’,” said Barrasso. “It was an extremely dangerous road. Crashes and deaths occurred all too often on that road. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the tribes and the state, the 17 Mile Road is now much safer.”
