U.S. maps quakes from oil activity

In its first comprehensive assessment of earthquakes believed to be caused by human activity, the U.S. Geological Survey unveiled a map Thursday identifying 17 regions with significant levels of “induced seismicity,” mostly from oil and gas drilling.

By far the hardest-hit are two areas centered in Oklahoma, the report says, one in the northern part of the state, extending into southern Kansas, and the other stretching from the center of the state down to the border with Texas.

“Oklahoma used to experience one or two earthquakes per year, and now they’re experiencing one or two a day of magnitude 3 or greater,” Mark Petersen, chief author of the report, said. “Oklahoma now has more earthquakes of that magnitude than California.”
