Why Native Americans Are Outraged Over the Vatican's First Hispanic U.S. Saint

When I was confirmed in the Catholic Church, I took on a saint name.

I chose Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, a Mexican Indian who was instructed by the Virgin Mary to pick flowers and carry them in his cloak. He obeyed, and when he released the flowers, the cloak miraculously bore the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe, Mexico’s most recognizable religious icon.

This is the story of Mexico, the story of how an Aztec temple was broken down stone by stone and rebuilt into a basilica, the story of why my abuelita prays the rosary every morning while an Aztec sunstone sits in her backyard.
