BEMIDJI -- After a spirited and sometimes racially charged debate, the Bemidji City Council voted 4-3 to include language on proposed plaques for a city park that acknowledges historical atrocities against Minnesota’s American Indian population.
A publically funded statue and four accompanying plaques are planned this June to be dedicated in Paul Bunyan/Library Park to honor Shaynowishkung, known as “Chief Bemidji,” as well as the entire Anishinaabe people.
“Truth-telling is the basis for the acknowledgment of injustice and suffering and the restoration of human dignity,” one plaque is planned to read. “The honor of one is the honor of all.”
