Red Lake School District #38 is accepting applications for the following position:

Position Title: Grades 9-12 ReDirection Room (RDR) Specialist

Reports To: Building Principal

Building: Assigned to the Secondary Complex for the 2015-16 school year

Terms: Per Teachers' Master Agreement

Position Overview: The RDR specialist is responsible for managing the RDR as part of the Student Behavior Management program. The RDR Specialist is a critical team member of the Tier II and Tier III behavior modification. RDR specialist serves as a conduit of communication to staff and parents, and models best professional practice as it relates to assisting students in turning around negative behavior.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Redirection Room Teacher shall:

1. Have completed an accredited licensure program and possess Minnesota licensure (7-12) in core subject areas (i.e. mathematics, language arts, social studies, science).

2. Demonstrate knowledge of:

o Red Lake High School Curriculum

o Minnesota graduation standards

o All computer based programs and software applications utilized

o Requirements for providing services Redirection Room settings

3. Demonstrate ability to use a wide variety of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials,

4. Demonstrate ability to use a variety of assessments that derive data for progress monitoring that drives instruction,

5. Demonstrate an understanding of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles.

6. Demonstrate an ability to collaborate with the 6-12 Academic Dean, Building/ Complex level principal, and home school liaisons

7. Demonstrate an ability to effectively interpret formative and summative data,

8. Demonstrate superior oral/written communication and interpersonal skills,

9. Demonstrate an ability and willingness to build relationships with all stakeholders in a manner conducive to learning,

10. Demonstrate knowledge about Red Lake Nation culture and communities,

11. Demonstrate an ability to deescalate negative and increase positive behaviors in students assigned to the Redirection Room

12. Fulfill requirements for mandatory background check,

13. Have good moral character and a strong work ethic.

Major Position Duties:

1. General requirements:

• Completed an accredited licensure program and possess a MN teaching license for the grade level being served.

• Demonstrate knowledge of:

-Red Lake Schools curriculum

-Minnesota Standards

-General understanding of technology to include Microsoft Word, Excel and other educational software.

• Demonstrate the ability to use a wide variety of instructional practices, approaches, methods and curriculum materials.

• Demonstrate a knowledge and ability of deescalating negative behavior and increasing positive behavior.

• Fulfill requirements for mandatory background check.

• Have good moral character and a strong work ethic. • Have a broad understanding of the relationship between student behavior and student achievement.

• Have a thorough understanding of student behavior management, social justice procedures and developmental social and mental health needs of the students in the school the RDR is located. • Possess a MN Teaching License

• Background check is completed and approved.

2. Manage the process and procedures of the RDR:

• Create a calm and quiet room.

• Provide for a writing process describing 'what happened', 'what should have happened', and 'how am I going to fix the situation'.

• Have all visitors call home

• Provide support and guidance to all students, as needed.

• Make referrals out to other persons or agencies, as needed (Administration, Comprehensive Health, Family & Children Services, Home-School Liaison, etc.).

• Communicate with teachers and support staff on procedures and process of RDR, as needed.

• Demonstrate an understanding of differentiated instruction and how this concept can apply to student behavior management. • Understand how and why the RDR plays a critical role in student behavior management

• Understand the reasons for each of the processes within the RDR, and be willing to attend professional development trainings, as needed.

• Have the ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with a wide range of persons and groups.

• The ability to form relationships with outside entities is necessary to build support programs that serve students. • The RDR will function in a positive, supportive manner.

• The number of visits per day by students will decrease as the year progresses.

• The building staff will function as a team, following the guidelines developed for student behavior management.

• Annual teacher observations will reflect growth in the management and process of the RDR.

3. Collect and manage data:

• Collect data on each student as they visit (name, teacher, reason, date, time in & out, call home, etc.).

• Enter data on an Excel spreadsheet on a daily basis.

• Share data on a weekly basis, as needed with Dean of Students, PLT's, Student Support Team, parents (as it pertains to their child), teachers, support staff, other. • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, used in creating and manipulating a data base.

• Have the ability to summarize multiple forms of data into succinct reports used by teachers and other support staff.

• Reports will be prepared and shared in a timely manner.

4. Provide input and guidance relative to student behavior management:

• Works closely with principal and dean of students.

• Participates in all levels of developing, adjusting and implementing student behavior management plan.

• Have the skills to work in a team setting, being able to support the direction of the school as a whole.

• The RDR teacher will be an active participant in the student management program.

5. Have an understanding of and respect for the history and cultural values of the Red Lake Nation:

• Be aware of the unique needs of the students attending Red Lake schools.

• Have working knowledge of the various programs and people available to support and guide students in the Red Lake schools.

• Have an understanding of the 7 Grandfathers Gifts and how they can be used to teach character education to students. • The ability to form relationships with outside entities is necessary to build support programs that serve students.

• The RDR teacher must be willing to incorporate the 7 Grandfathers Gifts and other cultural/historical connections into the daily processes of the RDR. • The RDR teacher will participate in school-wide activities related to the history and culture of the Red Lake Nation.
