Paralegal/Tribal Court Advocate-Red Lake Satellite Office of ALS

Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is seeking a full-time Paralegal/Tribal Court Advocate to provide direct services/case-handling duties to eligible clients in civil legal matters in the Red Lake Reservation service area.

BACKGROUND: Anishinabe Legal Services (ALS) is an Indian Legal Services 501(c)(3) organization providing free legal assistance to low-income individuals living on or near the Anishinabe Reservations located in Central and Northern Minnesota through grants and contracts with federal, state and tribal governments.

RESPONSIBILITIES: ALS is looking for a well-qualified and highly motivated Paralegal/Tribal Court Advocate to provide direct legal services for clients before administrative agencies and the Red Lake Tribal Court.

This Paralegal/Tribal Court Advocate will operate the Red Lake Satellite office and will be responsible to provide direct legal services to eligible clients with various civil legal matters through representation before administrative agencies and Tribal Courts. This Paralegal/Tribal Court Advocate is expected to become licensed as a Tribal Court Advocate immediately upon hire. Areas of practice will include family, housing, Tribal/Indian Law, consumer/collection, government benefits, estate planning, and are likely to include a wide variety of other miscellaneous civil practice areas administrative and judicial, depending on the need of the clients.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires that the applicant be willing to immediately become licensed and practicing law in the Red Lake Tribal Courts and before administrative agencies.

Qualified applicants must possess exceptionally strong communication skills, oral and written, negotiation skills, litigation skills, have exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and handle a large caseload of client matters in a wide geographic service area.

Paralegals with 3+ years of relevant legal experience are strongly preferred, as are applicants with familiarity and experience in practicing before administrative agencies. Prior experience working within Indian County is also preferred. Native American applicants are also highly encouraged to apply, and highest preferences will go towards applicants with existing licenses and experience practicing before the Red Lake Tribal Court.

All applicants are expected to be able to begin work immediately after hiring decision has been made. All applicants are expected to have a valid driver's license, insurance and automobile, as travel will be required as part of job duties and responsibilities.

COMPENSATION: D.O.E. Benefits include individual/family health and dental insurance and life insurance.
