In Navajo Nation, some hospitality for wayward cyclists

As I lay in my sleeping bag, out in the open, trying to sleep on a rough-hewn table pushed up against an adobe wall outside a Navajo trading post in the NW corner of Arizona, I had to admit to myself: This could have been a lot worse.

This was Fifer's and my town-too-far day, trying to get from Kayenta, Ariz., to the next town, 115 miles away in Colorado, and realizing that we were not going to make it. This is a region of slim margins; there is little water, few towns and a sparse economy. After 75 miles on Sunday, we had one option — the lone trading post at Teec Nos Pos.
