Lady Warriors upset by Walker-Hackensack-Akley 51-46 in East Section 8A semifinal - P15

Section 8A East Semifinal – #5 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 51 vs. #1 Red Lake 46

The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves were outscored by the Red Lake Warriors by a combined score of 147-90 in their two regular season games. In fact, the Warriors defeated the Wolves 80-37 on February 24th.

It's a good thing the Wolves have a short memory as they pulled off a major upset Saturday afternoon in the East Sub-Section 8A Semi-Finals in Thief River Falls.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley trailed Red Lake at halftime 25-18, but used a 13-0 run in the second half to put themselves in position to pull off the upset.

The Wolves took their first lead of the game at 30-29 with 10:17 remaining, but the two teams would battle through several lead changes and ties before Walker-Hackensack-Akeley took the lead for good at 44-43 with 1:50 remaining in the game.

Maxine Smith led the Wolves with 12 points and 17 rebounds as Walker-Hackensack-Akeley improved their overall ecord to 16-12. A pair of frershmen, Claire Longren and Katie Benjamin, combined to score 19 points for the Wolves.

Grace White led the Warriors with 20 points as they end a very successful season with a record of 24-3. Their two previous losses came against Mountain Iron-Buhl and Crookston.

The Wolves hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and finished 18 for 26 at the line for the game.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley will now face Clearbrook-Gonvick Tuesday (6:00 pm on 96.7 FM) for the East Sub-Section 8A Championship. The Wolves and the Bears split their two regular season games with each winning on their own home court.
