Section 8A Championship – Red Lake 81 vs. Win-E-Mac 75
It was an electric atmosphere at Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls Friday night as the Red Lake Warriors battled the Win-E-Mac Patriots for the Section 8A Championship.
Over 2,300 fans were in attendance as the Warriors were trying to defend the Section Championship they won last year over the Northern Freeze.
Red Lake had to get by a Win-E-Mac team that was coming off a very impressive win over Stephen-Argyle on Tuesday.
The Patriots were trying to get to their first State Tournament since 2000 when Win-E-Mac finished as the state runner-up to Southwest Minnesota Christian. And incidentally, it was Red Lake who they defeated for the title.
The first half featured seven ties and five lead changes, and the Warriors led 39-33 at halftime. The Patriots struggled at the free throw line in the first half as they went 1-9 at the line in the first eighteen minutes of play.
Red Lake started the second half by scoring five points in the first twelve seconds and built their lead to eleven points at 44-33. Win-E-Mac would come back and get to within two at 52-50, but that's as close as they would get.
The Warriors had to overcome some serious foul trouble as three players fouled out in the second half.
Jeremy Martin came off the bench and led Red Lake with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Rob Mclain scored 12 points and blocked 9 shots for the Warriors.
Zac Tradwell led Win-E-Mac with 17 points as the Patriots finished the season with an overall record of 21-9. It was Vern Johnson's first season as head coach at Win-E-Mac, and it was his fourth appearance in a Section Championship game as a head coach.
A total of 18 seniors (8 for Win-E-Mac and 10 for Red Lake) were on the rosters for last nights Section 8A Championship game. Red Lake will take an overall record of 23-5 into the State Tournament, and they will play at Williams Arena on Thursday. There will be coverage of the Warriors at the State Tournament on 96.7 FM and rjbroadcasting.com.
Red Lake lost to Maranatha Christian Academy 95-67 in the first round of the State Tournament last year, and they will get their chance to avenge that loss as they meet again in the first round.
