Diné Community Advocacy Alliance's Denisa Livingston to Participate in Washington Post's Food & Wellness Forum

In 2014, the Navajo Nation became the first government in the country to pass legislation taxing junk foods and also eliminating taxes on fresh fruits, vegetables and water sold on the reservation. On March 26, 2015, Denisa Livingston, a community health advocate, health and wellness consultant and a member of the Navajo Nation, will discuss this important legislation during the "America Answers: Changing the Menu" forum.

Denisa and her group, *Diné Community Advocacy Alliance* [ https://www.facebook.com/dineadvocacy ] (DCAA), were very instrumental in passing this important legislation and were motivated by the epidemics of diabetes and obesity, the dominant culture of unhealthy foods, and the lack of healthy food access on the Navajo Nation. She will participate in a new live event created by "The Washington Post" called "America Answers: Changing the Menu." It will be held March 26, 2015, at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. (For full information, visit *http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/america-answers/wp/2015/02/24/changing-the-menu/* [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/america-answers/wp/2015/02/24/changing-the-menu/ ]).

The event features numerous sessions on various aspects of food and nutrition. Denisa will appear at the 10 a.m. session titled "Soda, Salt and Sugar: The Next Generation of Taxes" that will explore efforts around the country "to make unhealthy food choices hurt your wallet as much as your waistline." Besides Denisa, the other panelist is U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.). The panel will be moderated by Abby Phillip, general assignment reporter for "The Washington Post".

"The Washington Post" calls the full event a "deep dive into food and wellness - what we eat, how we move and how to ensure a healthy, well-fed America. We'll talk to local community leaders, innovators in government and at the White House, business leaders, chefs, artists and entrepreneurs, and explore how they are working to improve what Americans eat."

*First Nations Development Institute* [ http://www.firstnations.org ] is proud to have been a strong supporter of Diné Community Advocacy Alliance as it worked over the past two years to introduce and get legislation enacted on the Navajo Nation to eliminate taxes on healthy foods sold on the reservation while increasing taxes on unhealthy junk foods and sugary beverages.
