Warriors edge Fosston 54-52 to win Sub-Section 8A East title, Warriors one step from state

THIEF RIVER FALLS — The Red Lake boys basketball team is one step away from returning to the Class A basketball tournament.

However, it took a thrilling back-and-forth battle with Fosston to get there.

The top-seeded Warriors rallied from a five-point second-half deficit and got some clutch foul shots in the final second from William Chaboyea and Jeremy Martin to beat the second-seeded Greyhounds 54-52 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

It’s the second-straight Sub-Section 8A East championship for the Warriors, who improve to 22-5 and will take on Sub-Section 8A West champion Win-E-Mac (22-8) in Friday’s 7 p.m. title game. The Patriots beat Stephen-Argyle 69-54 in the West title game.

Red Lake led 25-18 at halftime but the Greyhounds (25-4) rallied and were up by five late in the second half.

With just over two minutes left, Red Lake’s Russell Kingbird fouled out and the Greyhounds hit a free throw to go up 49-45.

However, the Warriors got a steal and a layup to cut the lead to 49-47, then Martin got the ball back and hit a layup to tie it at 49-all.

The Greyhounds’ Aaron Arneson answered with a huge three on the other end to make it 52-49 with 1:05 left, but that would be all the points Fosston would score.

Rob Mclain got a steal then hit a layup to cut Fosston’s lead to 52-51 with 46 seconds to go, then got another steal to give the Warriors the ball with 30 seconds left.

Fosston fouled Chaboyea, who made his first free throw to tie the game at 52-all.

He missed his next shot but got his own rebound to give the Warriors the ball with 25 seconds to go.

The Warriors called timeout and got the ball to Jeremy Martin, who was fouled with 1.9 seconds remaining.

He made both his shots and the Greyhounds missed their chance on the other and the Warriors escaped with the win.

Mason Kingbird led the balanced Warriors with 14 points while Mcclain 13, Martin had nine and Chaboyea had eight.

Darin Viken led Fosston with 24 points.
