Give to CSS Day Celebrates 102 Years of Commitment to Learning and Service at The College of St. Scholastica

Students and faculty to celebrate the ways in which supporting the college helps support the greater community

Duluth, MN -- (March 2, 2015) The College of St. Scholastica announced today plans for its annual Give to CSS Day on March 5. Give to CSS Day is a day full of garnering support and cultivating new donors to support the college, which is celebrating its 102nd year in Duluth.

Conducting Give to CSS Day on March 5 didn’t happen on accident. The date represents the day when, without the generosity of donors, classes would end for that particular school year.

“March 5 represents the academic year being 71 percent complete. If we didn’t raise additional funds including private gifts and endowments, classes would potentially stop,” said John Labosky, Vice President for College Advancement. “This day is not just about cultivating donors, it is also a wonderful time to celebrate what is great about our campus, our students and our alumni.”

In the days leading up to Give to CSS Day, the Duluth Campus will be alive with examples of why St. Scholastica is a great institution. Students will band together to participate in various service projects as well as donate some of their monetary resources to the cause. The largest of these events will happen on the steps of Tower Hall where the CSS football team will raise signs that communicate various reasons why giving back to CSS is important. This event will be memorialized and produced as a video to help promote Give to CSS Day. The Day of Giving event will be attended by Sister Lisa Maurer who is also an assistant coach of the Saint’s football squad who made the NCAA Division 3 playoffs this past fall. Maurer was featured in the New York Times for her dedication to the team in her unconventional role.

“This is all about our students and how a strong, vibrant campus creates leaders who give back. It’s a cycle of giving,” said Labosky. “Our hope is that years after graduation they are successful and able to donate in other ways to sustain the college and its many ways of shaping students in and out of the classroom.”

While the Duluth campus is the backbone of CSS, the college has satellite campuses at various locations in Minnesota and most recently in Surprise, Arizona.

The goals of Give to CSS Day 2015 are to raise $102,000 and engage 400 donors, with 100 of those donors being first time givers. It is an ambitious goal but one that is realistic, said Elizabeth Simonson, Executive Director for Advancement. “This college was founded on the Benedictine values of giving back and being an all-inclusive community where everyone can get an education and prepare for a lifetime of giving back,” she said. “Meeting our goals would make a huge impact on this college, its students and the greater community.”
