Red Lake advances to Section 8A East final against Fosston

THIEF RIVER FALLS — Top-seeded Red Lake will once again be playing for the Sub-Section 8A East title.

But the Warriors won’t be playing their main rival.

Red Lake eased past fourth-seeded Mahnomen 82-66 Saturday afternoon at Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls, but second-seeded Cass Lake-Bena was upset, falling 63-45 against third-seeded Fosston.

In the early game, the Warriors (21-5) led 46-30 at halftime, but the Indians (16-10) cut that lead to just four points with 11 minutes to go in the game.

However, Red Lake pulled away to earn the victory.

The Warriors will play the Fosston Greyhounds, who won their 17th straight game with their win over the Panthers.

Fosston (25-3) played stingy defense against CL-B (22-6), and took a 28-16 lead into halftime.

Cass Lake-Bena cut the lead to 42-32 with 10 minutes to go in the game but never got any closer and the Greyhounds won.

Red Lake and Fosston will tip off at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Thief River Falls in the Sub-Section 8A East title game. The teams didn’t meet in the regular season.

The winner of 8A East will take on either Win-E-Mac or Stephen-Argyle in the Section 8A title game at 7 p.m. Friday in Thief River Falls. Win-E-Mac, the top seed in the West, edged Kittson County Central 62-61 Friday while Stephen-Argyle routed Northern Freeze 71-50.

The winner of Section 8A advances to the Class A state tournament, which is scheduled for March 11-14 in Minneapolis.
