Constitution Conversation and Cookies

The Red Lake Nation Constitutional Reform Committee will be meeting every Wednesday night for an hour or so to have a conversation about Red Lake's constitutional reform initiative. This is a precursor to the upcoming third round of community meetings beginning in March. The first two rounds were not attended as well as the committee had hoped for something as important as revising our current constitution. There is so much to discuss regarding our current constitution that the committee decided to tackle this critical project in manageable sections at a time. The first community events we discussed four topics; land, natural resources, culture and language. The second round we discussed blood quantum and the removal of the Secretary of Interior approval clause.

The main thrust of "Constitution, Conversation and Cookies" is to give anyone who may have missed the first two rounds an opportunity to "get caught up." The kick off was on Jan. 21, 2015 in Redby, 5 PM - 6 PM. The next meetings will be Jan. 28th in Little Rock, Feb. 4th in Red Lake, Feb. 11th in Ponemah, Feb. 18th Redby, Feb. 23rd Little Rock--all 5 PM - 6 PM--and finally on March 4th we will hold two meetings, one in Ponemah and one in Red Lake, 5 PM to 6 PM. All meetings will be held at the local Community Centers, but if the Center is being used for any reason, we will post the new site via flyers, Facebook and email.

The third round of community meetings will begin in March and the topics will be govermental structure and constitutional design. Look for more information coming soon. So come and "get caught up" and let's talk constitution.
