POSITION TITLE: Director of Library Services and Tribal Archives– Full-Time

DEPARTMENT: Administration

REPORTS TO: President

SALARY: Negotiable

START DATE: January 19, 2015

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The primary major responsibility of this position is to direct the activities and development of the new community library collections and services in order to support the mission and educational goals of the Red Lake Nation College. This will involve seeking book collections and grant funding to support the new Community Library.

The secondary major responsibility of this position is to direct the activities, development and protection of the Tribal Archives collections of the Red Lake Nation Tribe.

ACCOUNTABILITY: This position will have dual reporting. Primary reporting will be to the President of the Red Lake Nation College since the position and Tribal Archives will be located in the new Red Lake Nation College Community Library facilities. Secondary reporting will be to the Tribal Executive Administrator for the Red Lake Nation Tribe regarding managing the Tribal Archives for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1.) The primary responsibility of this position is to direct the activities and development of community library collections and services in order to support the mission and educational goals of the Red Lake Nation College.

2.) This will involve heavy grant writing and seeking book collections and funding for community libraries.

3.) The secondary major responsibility is to direct the activities, development and protection of the Tribal Archives collections of the Red Lake Nation Tribe.

4.) Work will include intense collaborating with colleagues, Tribal staff and faculty, Tribal officials and community members while promoting the library and college, and serving its learning community with collections and services.

5.) Since part of the mission of the Tribal College is to promote and encourage Ojibwe language use, this will be a major operating goal of the community library.

6.) Further, since we are a Community Library, another key responsibility of this position is to serve the Red Lake Community with library services to children, students, community members and elders.

7.) Writing grants and active fundraising to support all of the major responsibilities are also required. These efforts will include working with current RLNC staff to coordinate all fundraising efforts.

8.) The Director of Tribal Archives & Community Library Services is generally responsible for providing library service and access, managing the overall operations of the library and archives, communicating and collaborating with colleagues to direct and develop library collections and services, and serving the college learning community and the greater Red Lake community.

9.) Other duties as assigned by the RLNC President.

EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

1. Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) or (MLIS) preferred. Specialization in Tribal Archives strongly desired.

2. Previous experience in library management preferred.

3. Experience managing administrative projects and events.

4. Knowledge of library technological systems and software.

5. Knowledge and understanding of Anishinaabe culture and history.

6. Red Lake Tribal Member and Native Hiring Preference applies.

3. Ability to assume a leadership role and to multi-task.

4. Ability to remain calm and patient when under duress.

5. Willingness to initiate and carry out complex tasks with or without supervision.

7. Understanding of and commitment to the Red Lake Nation College Mission and Vision statements.

SALARY:

Negotiable. Depending upon qualifications.

EDUCATION:

Preferred degrees are a Master's of Library Science (MLS) or a Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program and a specialization in Tribal Archives knowledge and education are preferred.

A Bachelor's degree in a related field with professional library experience is the minimum requirement for this position.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Minnesota driver's license within 30 days of hire, and current auto insurance.
