Football: Area high school playoffs begin Tuesday

Red Lake will face top-ranked Mahnomen

BAGLEY — The high school football playoffs begin Tuesday night and among the area teams with eyes of making the state tournament is Bagley.

The Flyers own the third seed in the Section 8-2A tournament and will open their postseason 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against No. 6 Warroad. Bagley finished the regular season 6-2 while Warroad is 1-7.

Hawley (8-0) is the top seed in the seven-team section and drew a bye into the semifinals. Frazee (7-1) is ranked No. 2 and will entertain United North Central (0-8) Tuesday. If the seedings hold, Bagley will visit Frazee Saturday in the 8-2A semifinals.

Tuesday’s other matchup finds No. 5 Crookston (2-6) traveling to No. 4 Barnesville (5-3).

In Section 8A the lone area team in the bracket is Red Lake and the Warriors face a steep uphill battle as they head to top-ranked Mahnomen Tuesday.

Tuesday’s other action finds No. 4 Fertile-Beltrami hosting No. 5 Red Lake County, No. 3 Lake Park-Audubon entertaining No. 6 BGMR and No. 7 Polk County West invading No. 2 Fosston.

Blackduck claimed the fourth seed and will host No. 5 Barnum 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Section 7A showdowns. That winner will tangle with No. 1 Braham on Saturday.

Deer River is ranked second and has the other quarterfinal bye. It will welcome the winner of Tuesday’s game between No. 3 East Central and No. 6 Ogilvie on Saturday.

Kelliher-Northome received the third seed in Section 7 Nine-Man action and will host No. 6 Littlefork-Big Falls 7 p.m. Tuesday. If the Mustangs prevail they will take on either No. 2 Ely or No. 7 Chisholm Saturday at the home of the higher seed.

In Tuesday’s upper-bracket contests, top-ranked North Woods will host No. 8 Northeast Range and No. 4 Bigfork will welcome No. 5 Mountain Iron-Buhl.

Clearbrook-Gonvick is ranked sixth in Section 8 Nine-Man play and will visit No. 3 Win-E-Mac 7 p.m. Tuesday. If the Bears can pull off the upset they will face either No. 2 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo or No. 7 Goodridge-Grygla on Saturday.
