Bagley football maintains top spot in Northstar East standings

BAGLEY — The Bagley football team held its position on top of the Northstar East Conference last week as the Flyers defeated Red Lake 43-8 in Red Lake.

Bagley shares first place with Pine River which downed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 33-6. In last week’s other East Division contest, Pillager edged Blackduck 14-8.

The West Division results saw Mahnomen thump Lake Park-Audubon 45-7, Badger-Greenbush-Middle River trip Red Lake County 20-14 and Fosston belt Fertile-Beltrami 35-8.

Bagley was able to use its strong running game against the Warriors as the Flyers ran for 300 yards. Leading the rushers was Walker Cage who gained 53 yards and scored a touchdown on two carries. Weston Johnson-O’Beirne rushed six times for 52 yards and Tyler Godin had two carries for 48 yards.

Lucas Olson scored one touchdown and gained 43 yards on four rushes and Ben Thoma ran twice and scored on both runs.

Andrew Gebhardt was among the defensive leaders and his contributions included a 60-yard interception return for a score.

The Flyers are home Friday as they welcome Pillager for the annual homecoming game. Friday’s other games find Blackduck traveling to Pine River, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley visiting Red Lake at 4 p.m., BGMR welcoming Mahnomen, Red Lake County hosting Fosston and Fertile-Beltrami entertaining Lake Park-Audubon.

Cass Lake-Bena continues to find the going difficult in the North Tri-County Conference as the Panthers are 0-4. Last week they dropped a 62-0 decision to Norman County East. CL-B hopes to regain its footing Saturday when it heads to Norman County West for an 11:15 a.m. game.

Kelliher-Northome improved to 3-1 overall and in the Great Northern Conference last week with a 56-18 victory over Lake of the Woods. Cromwell and Wrenshall lead the league with 4-0 records while Kelliher-Northome, Isle, Nevis and Onamia are 3-1.

Floodwood owns a 2-2 record and McGregor and Northland-Remer sit at 1-3. Trailing the pack at 0-4 are Carlton, Hill City and Lake of the Woods.

Kelliher-Northome makes the long trip to Onamia on Friday.

Clearbrook-Gonvick is 1-1 in Top of the State action and 2-1 overall. Last week the Bears had a bye and this Friday they will travel to Goodridge-Grygla which is 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Volleyball

In recent years Nevis has dominated the Northland Conference scene but this fall the teams have trimmed the gap with the Tigers.

Nevis was only 4-9 overall and 1-0 in the conference prior to Thursday’s home match against Blackduck.

Cass Lake-Bena began the week 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley was at the top of the league with a 2-0 Northland Conference record and a 5-4 overall mark.

Laporte is having a strong season and the Wildcats were 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the league entering the week.

Blackduck improved to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play with Monday’s 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 win at Remer. Northome-Kelliher began the week 1-4 in the league and Red Lake was 0-3.

Bagley won two of its three matches last week to improve to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Pine to Prairie Conference. Among those wins was a 23-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-16 win over Norman County East.
