Results are in for new Red Lake Tribal Council member

RED LAKE -- The unofficial results are in for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians' special election. Robert Smith appears to have beat six other contenders for a Red Lake District Tribal Council position Wednesday night.

The special election took place to fill the position vacated by Donald "Dudie" May Jr. in March.

Smith received 33.11 percent of 598 votes cast. Other candidates received as follows: Donald Desjarlait - 18.39 percent; Deanna Lasley - 2.84 percent; Lee Lussier - 17.56 percent; Clem May - 12.71 percent; Cherilyn Spears - 5.18 percent; and Julie Stately - 10.2 percent.

Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off election will take place within 60 days of vote certification. The victor of that race will serve the remaining two years of May's term.

Polls were open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Red Lake Humanities Center and the newly opened Absentee Ballot Committee located in the Tribal Council Headquarters Library. Results were released at 8:37 p.m.
