Meet familiar and new artists on Art Leap tour Sept. 27-28

Art Leap 2014, an "open studio event" featuring artists' studios and culturally rich destinations in the Park Rapids area, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28. The ninth annual tour offers art lovers a map to find their way to area artists' and artisans' studios, workshops and other featured locations. Studios will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The tour offers some familiar studio names with the opportunity to meet mature artists/artisans who have been practicing their individual skills and talents for decades.

Visitors also will discover new places and faces as familiar artists have invited others to join them for the weekend. Bickey Bender is hosting five other artists at a red caboose next door to her home on Stony Lake. If the weather cooperates, there will be demonstrations on pottery, paper making and more. Judy and Jerry Wegenast's Touch of Art Studio will feature Cyrus Swann's pottery and Theresa and Don Paul of Prairie Paul's Studio, makers of jewelry and unique copper pieces. Bruce Ostern will be a guest artist at the residence of Earl and Jeanette Wohlmann.

A new site this year is the Creative Minds/Messy Fingers Art Studio at Owl's Nest Resort on 5th Crow Wing Lake. Owners Kris and Bob Sauser do traditionally fired and raku pottery, glass fusing, some creative welding and some metal clay and glass fusing and will do demonstrations in wheel throwing, glass cutting and possibly raku firing and welding.

Six artists will be demonstrating at Smoky Hills Art in downtown Park Rapids and the band, Unpolished, will perform both days. Other live performances will be:

* The Art Leap Music Festival at Terrapin Station in Nevis from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday,

* A reception and talk by guest artist Jeron Childs at Nemeth Art Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, and

* The Great Northern Radio Show at Armory Square, also on Saturday. Call 800-662-5799 to reserve your free tickets.

Brochures with maps, other performance times and more information are available at the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, Park Rapids Area Library and other locations and at http://www.prlaac.org.
