Taos Pueblo Vies for Votes as USA Today's 'Best Native American Experience' in U.S.

TAOS, NM—Taos Pueblo in Taos, New Mexico is one of 20 nominees vying for votes in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice awards for the “Best Native American Experience” in the United States. Votes will be accepted online at 10best.com/awards/travel/best-native-american-experience now through Sept. 15 at 11:59 a.m. EDT (9:59 a.m. MDT).

Taos Pueblo is one of only five New Mexico destinations that made the list. Others include Acoma Pueblo; Gathering of Nations PowWow in Albuquerque; Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque; and Santa Fe Indian Market in Santa Fe.

The remaining contenders outside of New Mexico include: Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage, Alaska; American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco; Big Cypress Shootout in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill, Okla.; Cheyenne Frontier Days Indian Village in Wyo.; Denver March Powwow in Denver; Heard Museum in Phoenix; Julyamsh Powwow in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Mesa Verde National Park in Colo.; Miccosukee Indian Village in Miami; Monument Valley Tour in Utah; Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, N.C.; National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. and N.Y.; Tillicum Village in Seattle; and Waswagoning Recreated Ojibwe Indian Village in Wis.

In April 2014, Taos Pueblo was named as one of CNN’s top picks for “Best Places to Experience Native American Culture.” The Town of Taos was also recently named by USA Today as their #1 best August destination in the entire world.

Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community to be designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. Taos Pueblo has several must-see sacred feast days throughout the year that celebrate Catholic patron saints and are open to the public, including San Geronimo Day on Sept. 29 and 30. Traditional dances, food, and cultural celebrations on feast days offer a glimpse into the Pueblo’s past. Taos Pueblo artists use clay from the Sangre de Cristo mountains for their micaceous pottery, and local dirt to mud their adobe pueblos. Guided tours are available. Photography is not allowed during religious ceremonies. Visit taospueblo.com for details.

Voting for the 10Best Reader’s Choice awards for the “Best Native American Experience” is now open and ends on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at 11:59 a.m. EDT. The public can vote once per day, per category. Visit 10best.com/awards/travel/best-native-american-experience to vote for Taos Pueblo.
