MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNOUNCES JUNE LEGACY GRANT RECIPIENTS

Largest Number of Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants Made in a Single Cycle

ST. PAUL (July 31, 2014) – The Minnesota Historical Society announces 68 recipients of Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants (up to $10,000 each) totaling $420,777 in 35 counties. The grants are awarded quarterly to help non-profit and educational organizations, government units and tribal organizations preserve and share Minnesota history.

“Demand for this program continues to grow," said David Grabitske, MNHS manager of outreach services. "With 68 new projects, this is the greatest number of Legacy grant awards made in a single cycle. The activities funded are the kind of urgent and supplemental activities made possible through the Legacy Amendment."

A number of grants in this cycle were awarded to support scholarships to attend the national meeting of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), which will be held in St. Paul Sept. 17-20.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.

Wasioja Ruins Conditions Assessment and Treatment Plan: To hire qualified professionals to conduct a conditions assessment of the Wasioja Seminary, a contributing part of the Wasioja Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Hennepin County, AirSpace Minnesota, $7,420

About Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants

The Minnesota Historical Society received a legislative appropriation of $11.2 million for the 2014-2015 biennium for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants: $5,525,000 for FY 2014 and $5,565,000 for FY 2015.

Grants are available for history and historic preservation projects in three tiers. Small grants of $10,000 or less are awarded quarterly. The next small grants deadline is Oct. 10, 2014.

Applications for mid-size ($10,001 - $50,000) and large ($50,001 and up) grants will be awarded in two cycles, one for each fiscal year. All grants are administered through a competitive process using professional standards and criteria.
