Primary Function:

To work as part of the Economic Development & Planning Team, taking the lead on locating, pursuing, and obtaining funding for applicable planning and development activities that further develop the economic and community well-being of the Red Lake Nation. Reports to the Director of Economic Development & Planning; this is a full-time position with benefits, Salary; DOQ.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties:

• Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the Red Lake Nation and the Economic Development & Planning Department, and use that knowledge and understanding to present information in the best case possible to seek and capture funding from the appropriate sources.

• Establish and maintain knowledge and connection with various grant/funding announcements and information centers to remain aware of current funding opportunities far enough in advance of deadline.

• Analyze potential funding options to determine if they fit our specific needs and requirements.

• Produce high quality proposals that are clear, concise, and compelling: compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong, clear, and descriptive writing skills, high command of grammar and spelling, very detail oriented for accuracy and in accordance with guidelines and preferences, and writing compelling needs statements that support further development of the Red Lake Nation.

• Work closely with Red Lake Nation staff and departments in order to understand the stakeholders, capabilities, needs, scope, and impact that is to be incorporated into each funding proposal, and to establish collaboration between those working towards similar outcomes.

• Follow the authorization process: complete grant proposals in a timely and efficient manner to allow sufficient time for owner to review, and to obtain proper signatures for a submission on time.

• Determine best point of contact for each funding source, and keep in contact with funding source during their review of a submitted grant application in case additional supportive material is needed.

• Provide regular progress updates on all grant activity, and maintain an annual grant calendar with deadlines and approval dates.

• Maintain documentation of grant activities; including completed grant proposals, decision letters and other correspondence, as well as surveys, research or data collected to complete grant proposals. This data is to be filed in the office, with a copy of approved proposals/letters, and reporting requirements provided to Accounting.

• Maintain good communication with the Grants Office; keeping them aware of what grants we wish to pursue and the outcome of each grant applied for.

• Utilize and maintain Basecamp for our office; establish/maintain a connection with all department grant writers.

• Participate with department meetings, necessary administrative activity, development teams, grant writing groups, and with pre-approved professional development for continuous learning in the areas of grant writing, best practices, new technologies, and grant management.

• Network development; establish connections with community agencies both on and off the reservation to build beneficial relationships and create potential funding opportunities. Share gained knowledge of best practices with internal staff and keep the department updated on what relationships have been established.

• Any additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High School or GED Diploma.

• A Minimum of 1 year experience writing grants.

• Excellent writing skills, and meticulous to detail.

• Excellent inter-personal skills; able to work well with others and build positive relationships.

• Knowledge of budgets: how to create and read, as well as analysis of actual vs. budgeted.

• Knowledge of data and research.

• Strong organizational skills and prioritizing.

• Excellent computer experience with Microsoft Office: Word and Excel.

• Native American Indian Preference.
