The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians has applied to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for authorization to administer water quality standards under sections 303(c), 401 and 518(e) of the Clean Water Act. Approval would allow the tribe to adopt, review and revise water quality standards for its reservation and to certify that discharges comply with the tribe's standards for surface water.
EPA is reviewing the application and has asked the state for comments. Local governments and residents should submit comments on the tribe's assertion of authority to:
