Shirley Marie Maxwell, 75, of Red Lake died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN with Rev. George Ross officiating. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday, all at the funeral home. Interment will be at the St. John's Episcopal Cemetery in Red Lake, MN followed by a dinner at the Red Lake Center.

Shirley was born April 12, 1939 in Red Lake, Minnesota, the daughter of James Brun and Carrie (English) Downfeather. Earl and Carrie Downfeather raised and educated her in Red Lake. She studied to be a LPN in Superior, Wisc. She then attended BSU and studied social work with an emphasis in police administration. She married Edward Maxwell on July 1, 1964 in Blackduck, MN. She was employed at the Red Lake IHS for 24 years, starting out in medical records and retired in 2001 as a supply clerk technician supervisor. She then worked as a Red Lake gaming commission technician from 2006 – 2011. She was also a loving foster parent for 30 years. She enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, going to the casino, weekend rides and cooking Sunday dinners.

She is survived by: Son- Craig L. Maxwell; 3 daughters- Valencia Smith, Collette R. Maxwell, Becky Stillday; and a grandson who she raised – Brian D Maxwell; grandchildren – Lisa Lussier, Jerry Lussier Jr., Matthew Maxwell, Michael Reyes, Brianne Maxwell, Justin Smith, Joey Smith, Scotty Smith, Craig Smith and numerous other grandchildren; sister -Delores Lasley; and brother- Donald "Dutch" J. Brun, Sr.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son- Jeff Maxwell, 3 grandsons- Duane L. Maxwell, Edward Smith and Marcus Maxwell, siblings- Gerald "Butch" Brun, Mary "Fadie" L. Johns, Gretchen Stately, Rose "Lala" M. Johns, Bonnie M. Kingbird and Bruce A. Brun.

Active Casketbearers will be Pete Oakgrove, Ron Brun, Robert McLean, Jeff Pemberton, Paul "Snuffy" Smith, Jerry Lussier, Sr. with alternates "Baby Jer" Lussier, Jr. and Brian Maxwell.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Audrey Roy, Dorothy Cobenais, Mona Cook, Joyce Barrett, DeAnna Lasley, Nancy "Pemberton" Beaulieu, Mary Ann Brun and Sharon Garrigan.
