James Edward Whipple, 74, "AAZHIDEYAATIG-MIIGWAN" of Cass Lake, began his spiritual journey on Sunday, February 2, 2014. He was born on March 7, 1939 in Cass Lake, Minnesota the son of George Whipple and Margaret Day. James grew up in Cass Lake and worked as a security guard at the Grand Casino in Mille Lacs, Minnesota.

Jimmy was the biggest joker in town. He liked to spend his time hunting and fishing. Jimmy enjoyed volunteering his time comforting others as an ojibwe singer. Jimmy loved talking and visiting with his many friends daily. He was a spiritual man with a great respect for his native tradition. He was most definitely a family man, with a love for his children like none other, so much so that he would call them everyday just to check on them. Jimmy will be fondly missed by everyone who knew him.

Jimmy joins his family waiting for him who includes his parents George and Margaret, brothers George, Charlie and Bill, grandparents, nieces Geraldine and Heather and one nephew "Punky" Douglas Whipple.

Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his sons; David Otremba, James (Denise) Otremba, and Kelly Whipple, all of Cass Lake, MN, daughters; Andrianna Whipple and Barbara Littlewolf, brothers; Robert Whipple, John Whipple and Spencer Whitefeather, one aunt; Mary Ann Cross, 9 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

A wake service for Jimmy will begin at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2014 and continue until the 1:00 p.m. service on Thursday, February 6, all at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Cass Lake, MN. Lee Staples will be the spiritual leader. Interment will be held at the Whipple family cemetery on Oak Point Road, Cass Lake. Pallbearers helping to lay him to rest will be his sons; Kelly, David and James, as well as Luke Popp, Jeff Brown and Chad Hanvy. Honorary pallbearers are Sarah Headbird, Donnie Headbird, Jess Headbird and Chelsea "Wren" Hanvy
