FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Kelliher-Northome cruises to first-round victory

NORTHOME — Using 22 first-quarter points, the top-seeded Kelliher-Northome football team cruised to a 32-0 win over Northeast Range in their nine-man Section 7 tournament opener Tuesday night.

“It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, but it was a good win for us,” K-N head coach Derrick Gross said of his team’s performance.

The Mustangs, who improved to 9-0 with the win, hardly threw a pass in the first half, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the second quarter.

The team led 30-0 at halftime.

“It was snowing pretty hard,” Gross said. “We tried to keep it on the ground and eat the clock.”

Gross said his starters and main reserves didn’t play for more than a quarter.

In the second half, he put in mostly junior varsity kids, who were able to keep Northeast Range (1-8) off the board.

The Mustangs also forced a safety in the second half.

“We played more complete games earlier in the season,” Gross said. “But it was good for us to get out there. It was nice to give some of the kids some minutes as we advance deeper into the playoffs.”

The top-seeded Mustangs will host fourth-seeded Chisholm (6-3) in the second round Saturday. The Blue Streaks beat Mountain Iron-Buhl 34-8.

Also in Section 7, Bigfork beat North Woods 22-20 and Ely beat Lake of the Woods 43-0.
