FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Kelliher-Northome cruises to first-round victory

NORTHOME — Using 22 first-quarter points, the top-seeded Kelliher-Northome football team cruised to a 32-0 win over Northeast Range in their nine-man Section 7 tournament opener Tuesday night.

“It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, but it was a good win for us,” K-N head coach Derrick Gross said of his team’s performance.

The Mustangs, who improved to 9-0 with the win, hardly threw a pass in the first half, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the second quarter.

The team led 30-0 at halftime.

“It was snowing pretty hard,” Gross said. “We tried to keep it on the ground and eat the clock.”

Gross said his starters and main reserves didn’t play for more than a quarter.

In the second half, he put in mostly junior varsity kids, who were able to keep Northeast Range (1-8) off the board.

The Mustangs also forced a safety in the second half.

“We played more complete games earlier in the season,” Gross said. “But it was good for us to get out there. It was nice to give some of the kids some minutes as we advance deeper into the playoffs.”

The top-seeded Mustangs will host fourth-seeded Chisholm (6-3) in the second round Saturday. The Blue Streaks beat Mountain Iron-Buhl 34-8.

Also in Section 7, Bigfork beat North Woods 22-20 and Ely beat Lake of the Woods 43-0.

Bigfork (4-5) will travel to Ely (9-0) Friday.

In Section 8 nine-man action, Waubun (6-3) eliminated Cass Lake-Bena (2-7) with a 42-0 victory. Nevis (7-2) routed Northland 60-12, Ada-Borup (7-2) defeated Rothsay 40-8 and Moorhead Park Christian (5-4) blanked Norman County East 18-0.

In Section 8, Clearbrook-Gonvick stayed alive with a 38-14 upset over Goodridge/Grygla-Gatzke.

The Bears (5-4) will travel to Kittson County Central Saturday.

The Bearcats (9-0) defeated Climax-Fisher 53-6.

On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Win-E-Mac will host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo.

The Patriots won big, 61-6, over Norman County West, while W-A-O beat Stephen-Argyle 30-24.

In 11-man football, Blackduck remains the only area team left alive.

The fourth-seeded Drakes (4-5) upset East Central 20-0 to advance to the Section 7A semifinals.

They’ll take on top-seeded Braham (9-0) Saturday. The Bombers beat Cook County 32-6.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley lost to Barnum 46-8 and Deer River beat Ogilvie 34-14.

In Section 8A, Manhomen ended Red Lake’s season with a 58-6 victory and Fertile-Beltrami topped Fosston 34-20.
