Woman involved in fatal collision released from custody

BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji woman accused of causing the death of a passenger on a motorcycle in a collision Sunday was released from custody on $20,000 bail Monday afternoon.

Victoria Blakeley Whitefeather, 23, either worked with a bail bondsman or paid $2,000 to be released from the Hubbard County Jail.

Whitefeather was arraigned Monday on six counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of DWI after admitting to police she fell asleep at the wheel of her sport utility vehicle, crossing the center and striking a motorcycle driven by Robert Childs, of Proctor. Childs’ passenger, his wife, Tracy Childs, 51, was killed in the accident.

Hubbard District Judge Robert Tiffany set Whitefeather’s bail, according to court documents.

Robert Childs was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. He was listed as a patient there Tuesday afternoon but his condition was not released. Peter Thayer, who is Tracy Childs’ nephew, however, said Robert Childs is “in and out of consciousness” with “serious” injuries.

Robert Childs learned Monday that his wife had passed away, Thayer said.
