Man sentenced in three-year-old burglary case

BEMIDJI -- A little more than three years after a smash-and-grab burglary to a Bemidji sporting goods store in which about a dozen guns were stolen, one of the perpetrators was sentenced for the crime.

Dustin Reginald Barrett, 21, was sentenced Monday to 180 days in jail by Beltrami District Judge Paul Benshoof. Barrett, who was arrested following another alleged burglary in February, has already served 113 days of his sentence. Benshoof also placed the Redby man on 20 years probation.

Barrett was with Lee Sean Fier, 22, and two other men on the night of July 27, 2010, when they stole the weapons from Bluewater Bait and Sports, according to court documents. The whereabouts of the two men with Barrett and Fier that night are unknown. The group used a car jack to smash the glass front door of the business. Once inside, they took two rifles and a shotgun, among other weapons, according to court documents.

In Fier’s criminal complaint, the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office stated between 12 and 15 weapons were stolen that night. Following the burglary, the group took the guns to Red Lake where they sold or gave them away, Fier said.

Barrett was arrested Feb. 14 by a Beltrami County sheriff’s deputy outside a home in rural Beltrami County police said was burglarized. Barrett is a suspect in that burglary, and the case is ongoing.
